16–18 cm Male: bengalensis: Rufous ear-coverts, strong turquoise tinge to blue of upperparts, relatively pale rufous underparts. In flight, turquoise strip down upperparts very conspicuous. Bill mostly blackish. Female: Base or most of lower mandible orange-reddish. Juvenile: Underparts paler with dusky wash across breast, base of lower mandible orange-reddish. VOICE Usually 2–3 shrill, high-pitched piping notes, particularly in flight. HABITAT Streams in open and wooded areas, various inland and coastal wetlands (tends to avoid denser forest); up to 1,830 m. RANGE Un R Myanmar, W,NW,NE Thailand, Pen Malaysia, N Laos, E Tonkin, N Annam. Co WV throughout. Also PM Pen Malaysia.
