BLACK-CAPPED KINGFISHER

29–31.5 cm Adult: Black crown/head-sides, white collar, throat and breast, deep blue above with mostly black wing-coverts, red bill; whitish wing-patch. Juvenile: Blue parts duller, small rufous buff loral spot, collar buff-tinged, dark vermiculations on throat-/breast-sides (former sometimes streaked), brownish orange bill. VOICE Ringing, cackling kikikikikiki.., higher than similar call of White-throated. HABITAT Mangroves, sea coasts, various inland and coastal wetlands, gardens; up to 1,525 m (mostly lowlands). RANGE Fc/co WV throughout. Also PM E Tonkin, Pen Malaysia. Rc in summer Pen Malaysia, Singapore. Said to breed (but doubtful) SW,N Myanmar, N Laos.

Location : Pahang

16–16.5 cm Adult brodiei: Very small; buff and blackish imitation face on nape, speckled crown, streaked belly, no obvious white on coverts. Adult rufous morph (rc northern Vietnam at least): Very rufous, except for white of eyebrows/underparts. Juvenile: Crown to mantle unmarked, but whitish streaks on forecrown. VOICE Loud, rhythmic, hollow, piping pho pho-pho pho (often in daytime). HABITAT Broadleaved evergreen forest; up to 3,100 m (mostly above 400 m). RANGE Fc/co R (except SW Myanmar, C Thailand, Singapore, Cochinchina).

43–52 cm Male: Huge bill, dark glossy green head, white underparts with chestnut sides; largely blue upperwing-coverts, bold white underwing-coverts.Male eclipse: Flanks/belly more rufous than female, body markings blacker, upperwing-coverts bluer. Female: Huge orange-edged bill; crown and eyestripe not sharply contrasting; bluish-grey on upperwing-coverts. Juvenile male: As juvenile female but upperwing similar to adult. Immatures can resemble sub-eclipse adults. Juvenile female: Darker crown than female, paler and more spotted below, faint greater covert bar, glossless secondaries. VOICE Hollow liquid sluk-uk or g’dunk from courting males; descending gakgak-gak-ga-ga from females. HABITAT Lakes, large rivers, marshes; up to 800 m. RANGE Un WVMyanmar (except W), Thailand (except SE,S), E Tonkin. V Pen Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, C Annam, Cochinchina

VOICE Song is spaced, quite weak piping pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-pu and faster pupupupupupupu. Also hollow puwut-puwut-puwut-puwut and chu-chuwu-chuchu-chu-chu..etc. Slow rattled tchrrr-rrtand chrrrt-trrerrttrrerrt. HABITAT Broadleaved evergreen forest; up to 455 m. Juvenile: Duller than female, shorter crest, whitish greater covert tips, sooty-olive throat/upper breast.Male gayeti (S Laos, C Annam): Black crest (both sexes). Other subspecies M.s.flavocristata (S Myanmar to SE Thailand and southward). VOICE Clear piu-piu-piu-piu-piu.. song. Rattling tji-jup, shrill squeaky tria-tria-tria, tcheery tcheery-tcheery and squear-squear-squear etc. HABITAT Broadleaved forest; up to 1,680 m (below 1,200 m in Thailand and Pen Malaysia). BLUE-BANDED PITTA

15 cm in length, Erythropitta arquata or commonly known as the blue-banded pitta is a species of bird in the Pittidae family. It is found in Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia where it is endemic to the island of Borneo (Philipps, 2014). Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.The blue-banded pitta has scarlet forehead to the nape and sides of its neck, sky-blue postocular (behind its eyes) stripe, dark green-blue upperparts (which distinguish it from other Bornean pittas), with a narrow sky-blue line on its wings. It also has orange-rufous cheeks and throat and rest of its underparts are scarlet with sky-blue breastband appearing like a necklace. The females are similar but their upperparts are dark olive-green and their tails grey-blue. The juveniles are plain brown, mottled grey-brown and buffish on sides of the head and throat. This species feeds on ants and other insects

20–21.5 cm Male grandis: Dark blue above, lighter crown/neck/rump, mostly blue-black below.Female: Light blue neck-patch, brown below with buffish throat-patch. Juvenile male: Like juvenile female but mostly blue wings/tail, soon shows blue patches above.Juvenile female: Black tips and buff to rufous-buff spots above, deep rich buff and narrowly scaled blackish below (paler throat-centre/vent).Female decorata (S Annam): Darker blue neck-patch, shining blue crown and nape. Other subspecies N.g.decipiens (S Thailand, Pen Malaysia; N Laos[or unnamed race]): Recalls decorata but bluish-slate crown/nape. VOICE Ascending soft, whistled (usually 3–4 note): uu-uu-du-di or uu’uu’di etc. Rasping rattles and soft chu-ii, (ii higher). HABITAT Broadleaved evergreen forest; 900–2,565 m, locally to 450 m in winter (above 1,220 m in Pen Malaysia). RANGE F/c R (except SW,C Myanmar, C Thailand, Singapore, Cochinchina).
