23–24 cm  Adult sonneratii: Like hepatic female Plaintive but dark mask isolated by broad supercilium; whiter below with narrower bars. Juvenile: Whitish to pale buff bars on head sides/upperparts, weaker mask, coarser and more spaced dark barring. Other subspecies C.s.malayanus (Tenasserim and S Thailand southwards): Smaller, more rufescent. VOICE Male utters repeated loud pi,hi-hi-hi or pihu-hihu on descending scale. Secondary calls include rapid pi pi pihihi-pi pihihipi on rising scale. HABITAT Broadleaved forests; up to 1,500 m. RANGE Un/fc R (except C Thailand, W Tonkin).
