55–65 cm  Adult non-breeding falcinellus: Mostly uniform dark brownish (slightly purplish-tinged), white-streaked head/neck, green-glossed scapulars/coverts. Pale brownish bill, dark brownish legs, dark facial skin bordered above and below by white lines. In flight, bulbous head, thin neck, all-dark wings.Adult breeding: Mostly deep chestnut head/neck/body, green-glossed forecrown, purplish tinge to much of plumage, no head/neck-streaks, bolder white facial lines; bill mostly flesh coloured. Juvenile: Duller than adult non-breeding, dense whitish mottling on head/neck, whitish throat, no facial lines, little greenish gloss above. VOICE Low harsh graa, subdued grunting in flight. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Marshy wetlands; up to 800 m. Flies with rapid wingbeats, then glides. RANGE Ra/lc R Cambodia, Cochinchina. FR (currently?) C Myanmar. Ra/lo WV/NBV SW,S,E Myanmar.
