37.5–41 cm Male burmanica: Huge red bill, pale brown crown/headsides, greenish-blue above, buffy below. Female: Duller above.
Juvenile: Brownish-vermiculated nape/neck/breast and flanks.Male malaccensis (S Thailand southward): Darker crown
and head-sides, bluer (less turquoise) upperparts, wings and
tail. VOICE Territorial call is melancholy whistled iuu-iuu iuuiuu iuu-iuu iuu-iuu.. (i higher); often in duet with rasping calls. Loud tree-trew (trew lower) and explosive cackling
kek-ek-ek-ek... HABITAT Rivers and large waterbodies in/near
broadleaved evergreen and mixed deciduous forest, mangroves
(particularly outside range of Brown-winged); up to 800 m.
RANGE Un/lc R (except W,E Tonkin, N Annam).
