29–32, f 22–26 cm Male non-breeding: Longish neck, small head, drooping bill. Greyish-brown above with pale buff/whitish fringing, mainly whitish below with greyish wash and mottling on foreneck/ breast. Longish, usually orange/yellowish legs.Male breeding: Black or white to rufous-chestnut broad, loose ‘ruff’, bare face, pinkish bill.Male breeding/non-breeding (transitional): Face feathered, bill bicoloured, patchy plumage.Female non-breeding: Notably smaller than male. Both sexes show broad-based wings, white rump-sides, narrowish white wing-bar, toes projecting beyond tail.Female breeding: Greyish-brown with blackish markings above, variable bold blackish markings on neck/breast.Juvenile male: As breeding female above, but simpler warm buff/whitish fringing; head-sides to breast rather uniform buff.Juvenile female: Usually darker buff neck/breast than juvenile male, smaller. VOICE Occasional low kuk or wek in flight. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Marshes, grassy areas, rice paddies, coastal pools, rarely mudflats; lowlands. Surface-pecks and also wades in deepish water. RANGE Ra/sc WV SW,S Myanmar, Tenasserim, Thailand (except SE), Pen Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Cochinchina. V S Laos, E Tonkin.
