19–21 cm Adult non-breeding schaeferi(Thailand, Pen Malaysia, ? parts of Myanmar and Indochina): From other small plovers (except Greater Sand) by broad lateral breast-patches and lack of white nuchal collar. Sandy greyish-brown above with whitish forehead and supercilium. Best separated from Greater by combination of following subtle features: smaller size, neater proportions, rounder head, shorter and blunter-tipped bill (length roughly equal to distance from bill-base to rear of eye), tibia obviously shorter than tarsus, dark grey to greenish-grey legs, toes only project slightly beyond tail-tip in flight. Bill length varies from longest in this race to shortest in mongolus.Male breeding: Black
