31–35.5 cm Male erythrocephalus: Dark red head/breast, white breastband, pinkish-red belly, whitish wing-barring. (b) Female: Head and upper breast brown, concolorous with mantle, vermiculations on wings pale warmish brown. Juvenile: Like female but head, breast and upperparts rufescent; has less red on underparts. Male has broad buff bars on wings and soon attains red on head and upper breast. Other subspecies H.e.helenae (N Myanmar): Largest. H.e.chaseni (S Thailand, Pen Malaysia): Smallest. H.e.klossi (SE Thailand, Cambodia); annamensis (NE Thailand, N[south-east],C,S Laos, N,C,S Annam, Cochinchina); intermedius (north-east N Laos, W,E Tonkin). VOICE Deep, well-spaced, descending 4–5 note taup taup taup taup taup... Coarse rattling tewirr. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Middle to upper storey of broadleaved evergreen forest, 305–2,590 m; 700–1,680 m Pen Malaysia, locally 50 m Indochina. Unobtrusive, spends long periods motionless.
