24 cm Male: Plain maroon-chestnut upperparts, blackish tail with faint pale bars. Red neck-patch, often red on submoustachial. Female: No red on head. Juvenile: Warmer above; may show red on crown. VOICE Shrill descending keek-eek-eekeek-eek-eek from males. High wavering kik-kik-kik-kikkik-kik... Nervous kik notes, or kik-ik...kik-ik. HABITAT Broadleaved evergreen forest, secondary growth, bamboo; up to 1,525 m (below 900 m in Thailand). RANGE Co R south Tenasserim, W(south),S Thailand, Pen Malaysia; formerly Singapore (one recent unconfirmed record)
