25–27 cm Adult gallinago: Relatively long bill, eyestripe broader
than supercilium at bill-base, bold pale buff/white lengthwise
stripes above, largely white belly/vent, no obvious white wingcovert tips, tail clearly projects beyond closed wings. In flight,
prominent white trailing edge to secondaries, panel of unbarred
white on underwing-coverts, toes project only slightly beyond
tail, little white on outertail (more than Pintail/Swinhoe’s). (d)
Juvenile: Fine whitish mantle/scapular lines, narrower buffish white covert-fringes. VOICE Rasping, often slightly rising scaaap
when flushed, more drawn-out than Pintail/Swinhoe’s. HABITAT
& BEHAVIOUR Open marshy areas, rice paddies; up to 1,220 m.
Flight-style fast and erratic, often zig-zagging. RANGE Un/co WV
(except W Tonkin, N,S Annam). Also PM Cambodia.
