24 cm Female benghalensis: Drooping bill, mostly plain and dark, whitish spectacles, buffy median crown-stripe and mantlelines, white below. Barred tail/flight feathers, largely clear white underwing-coverts.Male: Greyish-brown head to breast and upperside, buffish spectacles. Large rich buff markings on wing-coverts. Juvenile: Like male but coverts greyer with smaller buff markings. VOICE Female territorial call is 20–80 or so short kook or koh notes (like blowing into empty bottle), usually at dusk/night. Single kook during roding display. May give explosive kek when flushed. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Marshy areas, wet rice paddies; up to 1,525 m. Quite secretive, mainly crepuscular. Legs trail in flight. Female has ‘roding’ display, low over ground. RANGE Un R (except N,S Annam).
