11–13 cm Male breeding inexpectatus: Rufescent forecrown, pale below (including vent), long bill/tail. (b) Male non-breeding/female: Shorter tail. Juvenile: Crown initially all green.Adult maculicollis (southern S Thailand southward): Darker above, darker grey nape, ear-coverts and streaks on breastsides. Other subspecies O.s.longicauda (north Indochina; E Myanmar?). VOICE Explosive chee-yup chee-yup chee-yup.., pitchik-pitchik-pitchik.. or te-chi te-chi te-chi te-chi.. etc. Calls with pit-pit-pit.. and quick cheep-cheep... HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Gardens, scrub, bamboo clumps, cultivation borders, open woodland, mangroves; up to 1,525 m. Quite skulking, frequently cocks tail. RANGE Co R throughout.
