COLLARED KINGFISHER



Location :  Karpal Singh Drive, Pulau Pinang

24–26 cm Adult armstrongi: Blue above with turquoise wash, whitish collar/underparts/loral supercilium, faint creamy-buffish flankwash. Juvenile: Duller/greener above, buff wing-covert fringes, dark-vermiculated collar/breast, often a buffy-brown tinge on collar, breast-sides and flanks. Other subspecies T.c.humii (Myanmar and S Thailand southwards): Bluer above. T.c.davisoni(Coco Is): Smaller; blackish-green head-sides, dusky-olive upper mantle, buff-tinged below. VOICE Loud shrieking kick kyew, kick kyew.. (kick rising, kyew falling). Loud shrill krerk krerk krerk krerk.. or kek-kek-kek-kek.., often ending with jee-jaw notes. HABITAT Mangroves, coastal wetland habitats, cultivation, gardens, parks, sometimes large rivers, marshes; lowlands (to 1,300 m on migration). RANGE Co coastal R (except E Tonkin, N Annam). Locally inland NE Thailand, Pen Malaysia and along Mekong R in Cambodia, Cochinchina; formerly C,S Laos. Also PM Pen Malaysia. Rc (status?) E Tonkin
