15.5–16.5 cm Female verreauxii: Like Common but slightly smaller, with
blue ear-coverts, deeper blue crown, upperparts and wings
(without turquoise), deeper orange-rufous below. Male bill
mostly blackish. Juvenile: Rufous on cheeks and earcoverts, dark scales on duller breast, initially mostly reddish bill. Female coltarti (W,N,C,S Myanmar, NW,NE[north-west]
Thailand, Indochina): Pale turquoise crown-bars, wing-covert
spots and strip down upperparts. Other subspecies A.m.scintillans (S[east] Myanmar, Tenasserim, W,SE,NE [south-west]
Thailand): Roughly intermediate between verreauxii and
coltarti. VOICE Typical call is higher-pitched and shorter than in
Common, and often given singly. HABITAT Streams, smaller rivers
and pools in broadleaved evergreen and mixed deciduous forest, mangroves; up to 915 m. RANGE Fc R (except SW,E Myanmar,
C Thailand, W,E Tonkin); sc Singapore.
