25–28 cm Adult longicaudatus: Black head with white throat.Juvenile: Black bars/scales above, wavy dark bars below. Adult schach (Vietnam): Grey crown to mantle, smaller wingpatch. Juvenile: Browner crown to mantle with indistinct
bars/scales.Adult ‘fuscatus’ morph (E Tonkin): Blackish throat; brownish-grey crown/nape/body (paler below);
mostly blackish scapulars. (e) Juvenile: Relatively plain, blackish throat. Other subspecies L.s.bentet (Pen Malaysia, Singapore): Like schach but smaller, varied black forecrown (may
extend behind eye), paler crown to back, pale warm buff scapulars with whitish outer edges, rufous-buff rump/uppertailcoverts, whitish tertial fringes. L.s.tricolor (Myanmar, NW Thailand, N Laos). VOICE Sings with low scratchy warbling, including
mimicry. Scolding chaak-chaak in alarm. HABITAT Open areas,
cultivation, gardens, secondary growth; up to 2,135 m. RANGE
Un/co R (except SW,S Myanmar, Tenasserim, S Thailand, Cambodia, S Annam, Cochinchina). V northern Cambodia. Rc (status?) SW,S Myanmar, Tenasserim.
