14–16 cm Adult non-breeding: Longer-necked than Red-necked, finer bill with pale-based lower mandible, browner above with larger dark feather-centres, brown-washed and distinctly darker-streaked neck-sides/breast, yellowish-brown/greenish legs, longer toes.Adult breeding: Dark-streaked rufous crown, broad rufous fringing above, creamy-buff wash on boldly darkstreaked neck-sides/breast (breast-centre may be paler).Juvenile: As adult breeding but obvious white mantle-lines, greyer lower scapulars. VOICE Liquid kurrrip or chirrup and shorter prit in flight. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Freshwater marshes, wet rice paddies, saltpans, coastal pools, rarely mudflats; lowlands. Often feeds amongst vegetation. May stand erect with neck stretched up when alarmed. RANGE Un/co WV (except W,N Myanmar, C Laos, W Tonkin, N Annam). Also PM Pen Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Cochinchina. Rc in summer Singapore
