15–16 cm Adult rufulus: Less well-marked above than Blyth’s (crown being most obviously streaked), more rufescent below (particularly flanks), throat often buffy. Lower mandible more yellowhorn than Richard’s/Blyth’s. See Richard’s for differences.Adult worn: Differs as Richard’s.Juvenile: More scalloped and spotted. Other subspecies A.r.malayensis .Other subspecies A.r.malayensis (south of c.12°N and S Indochina). VOICE Simple repetitive chew-ii chew-ii chew-ii chew-ii... song. Explosive but relatively subdued chip, chup or chwist, usually in flight. HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Open areas, drier cultivation; up to 1,500 m. Weaker, more fluttering flight than Richard’s. Undulating and parachuting song-flights. RANGE Co R throughout.
