RHINOCEROS HORNBILL

91–122 cm Male rhinoceros: Bright red and yellow upward-curved casque with black base. Mostly black with white lower belly and undertail-coverts, and white tail with broad black band across centre. Bill mostly pale yellowish to whitish, eyes reddish, eyering blackish.Female: Smaller, eyes whitish, eyering reddish. Juvenile: Bill yellow with orange base, casque barely developed, eyes pale blue-grey, eyering blue-grey. VOICE Male utters deep, forceful hok notes, female a higher hak, often in duet: hok-hak hok-hak hok-hak... Also a loud throaty gerronk by both sexes when flying (often simultaneously or antiphonally). HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Broadleaved evergreen forest; up to 1,220 m. Usually found in pairs or small groups, occasionally larger flocks of up to 25. RANGE Sc/lc R extreme S Thailand, Pen Malaysia. Frc Singapore.
