25 cm Male phaioceps: Red cheek-patch; short black bill, speckled throat.Female: No cheek-patch.Male squamigularis (S Thailand southwards): Heavier marked throat, barred belly.Male fokiensis (Tonkin, N Annam): Creamy head, heavy crown/throat-streaks, darker body. Female creamier headed and darker below than phaioceps. Male annamensis(southern Indochina, N Laos): Darker-headed than fokiensis. VOICE Laughing kweep-kweep-kweep from males. Also, slightly descending and accelerating series of notes. Drumming slowly grinds to halt: bdddddd d d d dt. HABITAT Broadleaved forest, secondary growth; up to 1,450 m (below 1,050 m in Thailand/Pen Malaysia). RANGE Un/co R throughout.
