27–30 cm Adult: Green-glossed black head/neck/underparts, white supercilium, purplish-glossed lower hindneck, bronze-olive lower mantle to wing-coverts, chestnut-maroon back to uppertail.Juvenile: Dull chestnut crown, blacker on hindneck, whitish face and underparts with rufous-buff on neck, black and white tail. VOICE Short low harsh guttural grunts and wheezy piping seek-seek-seek... HABITATWell-vegetated freshwater marshes, lakes, pools; up to 1,000 m. RANGE Un/lc R Myanmar (except W), Thailand (except SE), Indochina (except W,E Tonkin, N,C Annam); formerly north-west Pen Malaysia.
