21.5–24.5 cm Male amabilis: Chestnut forehead/mask, blue hindcrown and nape, and bars above.Female: Rufous-and-black bars above; white below with dark-scaled breast/flanks. Juvenile male: Dusky scales/bars on ear-coverts/breast, brown bill with orange lower mandible and pale tip. Juvenile female: Heavy blackish scales/bars above; bill as juvenile male. Other subspecies L.p.deignani (S Thailand); pulchella (extreme S Thailand, Pen Malaysia). VOICE Long whistle, then <15 slow couplets: wheeeoo chi-wiu chi-wiu chi-wiu chi-wiu... Sharp wiak wiak... HABITAT & BEHAVIOUR Broadleaved evergreen and mixed deciduous forest, bamboo, often away from water; up to 1,100 m. Slowly raises/lowers crown.
