29–31.5 cm (breeding adult tail up to 25 cm more) Adult breeding: Blackish-brown; white head/foreneck,
yellow-buff hindneck, long blackish tail, mostly white wings.Adult non-breeding: Drab brown above, pale buff
supercilium/neck-side bordered by black eyestripe that leads to
breast-band, white below, shorter tail.Juvenile: As adult
non-breeding but rufous-chestnut crown, rufous-buff fringing
above, weaker breast-band. VOICE Deep rhythmic t’you or meonp notes, and nasal mewing jaew or tewn notes (territorial).
Sharp tic-tic-tic.. and nasal brrr-brrp; high whining
eeeaaar in alarm. HABITAT Well-vegetated freshwater marshes,
lakes and pools, also mangroves, large rivers on passage; up to
1,000 m. RANGE Un/lc R (some movements) Myanmar (except
W), C,NE Thailand, Cambodia. Sc/lfc WV Thailand, Pen Malaysia,
Cambodia, N,S Annam, Cochinchina. Sc/un PM C Thailand, Pen
