21.5–28 cm Male interpositus: Blue-black; orange-rufous below, white rump, long blackish tail with white outer feathers.Female: Dark parts greyer, paler below, tail shorter.Juvenile: Buff speckles/tips/fringing above, dark-scaled buffish throat/breast. Other subspecies C.m.pellogynus (Tenasserim, S Thailand), mallopercnus (south of c.6°N). VOICE Highly varied melodious song, with mimicry. Harsh tschack. HABITAT Broadleaved forest, bamboo; up to 1,525 m. RANGE Fc/co R (sc Singapore)
