16–17 cm Male xanthorhynchus: Glossy violet-purple, white-barred lower breast to vent, red-based orange bill.Female: Browner above than Asian Emerald, mostly bronzy-brown crown/nape, red-based yellowish bill.Juvenile: Darker than Asian Emerald, more rufous-chestnut base colour to crown/nape, bold rufous-chestnut and dark greenish bars above, rufous-chestnut fringes to flight feathers, no rufous wash on throat/breast. VOICE Loud, sharp, spaced tee-wit during undulating flight. Secondary call is shrill accelerating, descending trill preceded by triple note: seer-se-seer, seeseeseesee. HABITAT Broadleaved forests, sometimes parks and gardens during movements; up to 1,100 m (mainly breeds below 600 m). Often in canopy of tall trees.
