22–23 cm Male harterti: Dull vinous-reddish head/underparts, dark above with yellow marks, blackish breast-band.Female: No breast-band.Juvenile: Paler and streaked below, browner crown/head-sides, yellow eyebrow, spots and streaks on mantle and tips to coverts. VOICE Sharp whistled wheeoo, followed by loud rising frantic notes. Brief, rather nasal whee-u (ee stressed), falling kyeeow, yelping keek-eek-eek. HABITAT Broadleaved forests; up to 1,100 m. RANGE Un/lc R S Myanmar, Tenasserim, Thailand (except C), Pen Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, S Annam, Cochinchina; formerly Singapore
