40–47 cm Male: Blackish with white flanks, purplish-glossed head,
drooping crest, grey bill with whitish band and black tip.Male
eclipse: Browner black; greyish flanks, small crest, duller bill. Female: Dark brown with paler flanks, slight nuchal
tuft/bump, yellow eyes, often some white on face at sides of billbase; less extensive white upperwing-band than other Aythya
ducks (same on male). Undertail-coverts can be white. Juvenile:
As female but somewhat paler head/upperparts (crown dark),
pale area on lores, little or no crest, browner eyes (particularly
female). VOICE Low vibrant whistled wheep-wee-whew from
courting males; growling err err err.. from females. HABITAT
Lakes, large rivers; up to 1,300 m. RANGE Sc/un WVW,N(lfc),C,E,S
